We come to the last in our series on how to get a job with a great company.
Given all the time, effort and resources you have invested over several weeks I urge you not to give up.Here is just one true story on a guy who didn’t give up. Here is the story of James Dyson.
You know the feeling when some product lets you down. You wish someone could make a better product. James Dyson did just that. He is a man who likes to make things work better. In 1978, while vacuuming his home, Dyson realised his bag vacuum cleaner was constantly losing suction power. He noticed how dust quickly clogged the pores of the bag and blocked the airflow, so that suction dropped rapidly. He thought to himself there must be a way to solve this problem. Five years and 5,127 prototypes later, Dyson created the the world’s first cyclonic bagless vacuum cleaner.
Yes you read correctly – 5,127 prototypes over 5 years. That is almost 3 attempts EVERY DAY for 5 YEARS. Dyson wasn’t trying to find a cure for cancer or find a way to create world peace. He wanted to come up with a better vacuum cleaner. Now that is commitment!
The result of Dyson’s persitence? He is now Sir James Dyson, is one of the wealthiest men in Europe and leads a research group which has developed products (including the Dyson vacuum cleaner) that have accounted for more than $10billion in global sales. Not a bad outcome.
If Sir James can persist that many times over years, you & I can (and should) be able to persist to get that job or make that career change we really want. I think a person’s livelihood is much more important and vital than a vacuum cleaner – what do you think?
Hope this series has helped.
Bye for now.
